Amsterdam is not only for lovers of art and culture or those curious about the Red Light District or the gay life. It is also for those who have sports running in their blood. Being only minutes away from open countryside, the Dutch capital offers many sporting activities to seduce all sports and fitness buffs out there.
Athletics – The major athletics events happen at the Olympic Stadium, Ajax Stadium, Middenweg, and Sporthal Zuid, and Stadionplein.
Bowling – Have some bowling actions at a center at Scheldeplein.
Cycling – Amsterdam is home to cyclists and you will see them everywhere in the city. If you would like to bike, you can always rent a bike to explore the city all by yourself or to join an organized bike tours.
Football/Soccer - The 52,000 Amsterdam Arena Stadium houses the Ajax football team, a team to beat in The Netherlands as well as Europe.
Fitness centers and gyms – If you wish to maintain your fitness regime, the city offers a good variety of gyms to choose from, including Garden Gym (Jodenbreestraat 158) and Brightside Conditiecentrum and Fitness (Zocherstraat 42 1).
Golf courses - Amsterdam has several nice golf courses: The Sportpark de Weeren (Vollendammerweg 316), the Amsterdamse Golf Club (Zwarte Laantje 4), and the Golfbaan Sloten (Sloterweg 1045).
Minigolf – You will find the best minigolf courses in the Amstelpark, the Amsterdamse Bos, and the Sloterpark.
Horse riding – If you are into horse riding, head to the Amsterdamse Bos, located south of Amsterdam.
Jogging – The city offers many opportunities for serious and leisure joggers, but your surest bet for nice tracks are those found in the Amstelpark and the Amsterdamse Bos.
Squash courts - Enjoy squash courts in Squash City (Ketelmakerstraat 6) and Amstelborgh/Borchland (Borchlandweg 6 12).
Swimming pools – Amsterdam has many swimming pools with top-class facilities for both indoor and open-air swimming. Many hotels also have their own swimming pools: Floralparkbad (Sneeuwbalweg 5) and Mirandabad (De Mirandalaan 9).
Tennis – You can find public tennis courts in many of the city’s parks and some hotels boast their tennis courts: Tennishal Kadoelen (Sportpark Kadoelen 5), Amstelpark (Koenenkade 8), Gold Star Tennis (Gustav Mahlerlaan 20), and Frans Otten Stadion (Stadionstraat 10).
