You may have heard about Amsterdam’s notorious Red Light District and quite frankly, everything you have heard is true. From erotic museums to sex shops to brothels, this vivacious neighborhood leaves nothing to your imagination. But to put rumors to rest, you must check the district out for yourself.

Locals popularly call this place the Rossebuurt. Certainly, the neighborhood that you know about is the one where gorgeous women of different nationalities parade their bodies in red-fringed window parlors. Another familiar image is of packs of men with raging testosterone, giggling women having a hen night, shocked curious couples, and busloads of tourists toting cameras. This only shows that the Red Light District is worth a visit, and for the easily offended, a little look in.

But few notice that the neighborhood is one of the oldest and loveliest parts of Amsterdam with its absolutely fascinating 14th century architecture and winding narrow, cobbled streets. The buildings are tall and thin and they crowd together, towering above the tree-enshrouded canals. The Red Light District simply bursts with charm and color and you cannot help but appreciate the tree-lined canals and antique architecture that leans at odd-angles.
Music invites every visitor to stay a bit longer. The classy eateries and authentic eateries also make the place so appealing. Restored façades, more stylish clientele, and recently resurfaced streets are now giving a different light to what was once a seedy and dark part of Amsterdam.
